Reading: Revelation 6:7-8

Enter the pale horse. Pale is not white. The word is ‘chloros’ and literally means yellowish-green. Or the color of: gross. The reason this is translated as pale is because it brings disease and death. So there are things on this planet that there is no cure for. That’s the pale rider. He mocks medial innovation and laughs at our technological advancements.

Additionally, the text says, “The rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed with him.” It’s important for us to distinguish between Hades and Hell because the bible distinguishes between the two. Hades is the place of the dead. In the Old Testament it is called Sheol. Hell, on the other hand, is the place of final judgement. Jesus calls it a lake of fire. It’s the place where Death and Hades will be cast. That is to say: Hades and Hell are different because Hades (and death) will be thrown in to hell (that’s Revelation 20:14 if you’re wondering). But. People make the mistake of saying, “When you die things just cease to exist.” Not according to God. Death is not the end. Which is why it’s so important to trust in Jesus.

But. What I want to draw your attention to is the fact that the four riders are true across human experience. Like. Everywhere. And. Always. In other words, they’re always riding, they’re always destroying, they’re always bringing what God told them to bring to bear on humankind.

Therefore. The question you need to consider is: Which horse affects me? It’s important to recognize this so that you can stand firm. So. Are you prone to following myths? White horse. Are you angry and on edge? Red Horse. Do you tend towards physical or spiritual famine? Luxury instead of necessity. Black Horse. Or are you constantly worried about your health. And I have to have this vitamin, and do this exercise, and…pale horse.

The good news is one day the True Rider of the white horse will eventually come back, and He destroys all these other riders. So there’s nothing to fear.
